We unfortunately did this short trail just as the sun was almost completely set. Even without the benefit of light, the view and experience was great. The trail starts just to the right of the information building. You will see a nice sign clearly marking the start of Coulee Viewpoint Trail. From here it is a small dirt path before it opens up into the wider area near all the limestone formations.
Coulee Viewpoint is a unique place in the park because the trail actually takes you up a set of stairs and takes you along the tops of these formations. You will come across a few interpretive signs that help decipher just what your exactly looking at. This hike is great way to see the Badlands from the inside, and from the top, all in one go.
The rain and water creates some VERY interesting holes, caverns and erosion patterns that is just amazing to see. Just be carefully when the ground is wet. The limestone can make it a bit tricky at times.
